Zhongchun Chen
Professor, Ph.D. (Tohoku University)
Prof. Chen received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Tohoku University in 1997. He joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Tottori University in 2009 as Professor. Prior to joining Tottori University, he worked as an Associate Professor in Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tohoku University.
Prof. Chen's research interests are in the areas of synthesis, processing, and characterization of advanced functional materials and composite materials, including thermoelectric materials, materials for solid oxide fuel cells, metal-matrix composites, ceramic-matrix composites, clad composites, and nanostructured materials.
Prof. Chen is a member of The American Ceramic Society, The Japan Institute of Metals, The Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity, Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy, The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, and The Thermoelectrics Society of Japan. Prof. Chen received an Outstanding Research Award (AIDA Award) and Best Paper Award, both from The Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity in 2009.

- Research Interests
Our group’s research is focused on
(i)
control of chemical reactions, microstructural evolution, and textural development during materials processing,
(ii)
understanding the relationships between powder characteristics, processing conditions, microstructures, and performance (mechanical, physical or thermoelectric properties), and
(iii)
martensitic transformation behavior and transformation toughening of ceramics. Current specific research topics include
(1) Processing and performance evaluation of thermoelectric materials (e.g., Bi2Te3, Zn4Sb3, and CoSb3 systems)
(2) Synthesis and toughening of all-oxide ceramic-matrix composites
(3) Coextrusion of ceramic composites for solid oxide fuel cells
(4) In-situ synthesis and characterization of metal-matrix and intermetallic-matrix composites
(5) Preparation of high-performance clad steel pipes by multi-billet extrusion technique
(6) Martensitic transformation of zirconia and its applications to transformation toughening of engineering ceramics
(7) Surface coatings by gas-assisted deposition technique
(8) Development of influenza antiviral ceramic materials
